Emissions Scenarios 2000

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (2000)

The long-term nature and uncertainty of climate change and its driving forces require scenarios that extend to the end of the 21st century. This report describes the new scenarios and how they were developed. It covers a wide range of the main driving forces of future greenhouse gas trajectories ranging from demographic to technological and economic development. The set of emissions scenarios presented in the report is based on an extensive assessment of the literature, six alternative modeling approaches, and an 'open process' that solicited wide participation and feedback from many groups and individuals. This report further describes the range of greenhouse gas emissions in the scenarios that have been developed and how they relate to driving forces. This report goes on to highlight how these scenarios can be used and what future research on emissions scenarios would be of great use
