Geospatial Dataset of the Global Peatland Map 2.0 from the Global Peatlands Assessment ----------------------------- This dataset was used for map production, statistics and analysis in the Global Peatland Assessment 2022: UNEP (2022). Global Peatlands Assessment – The State of the World’s Peatlands: Evidence for action toward the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of peatlands. Main Report. Global Peatlands Initiative. United Nations Environment Programme, Nairobi. The dataset was compiled by the Greifswald Mire Centre with data of the Global Peatland Database. Underlying dataset of the UNEP Global Peatlands Assessment - The State of the World’s Peatlands: Evidence for action toward the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of peatlands, Global Peatlands Initiative, United Nations Environment Programme, Nairobi. Dataset Characteristics: Geotiff in projection: WGS 84 values: 1= peat dominated, 2= peat in soil mosaic resolution: roughly 1x1 km Dataset Description: The Global Peatland Map was compiled by amalgamating country-level peatland maps and high-resolution peatland ‘proxy’ data from the Global Peatland Database (GPD) using a ‘bottom-up approach’. The map is spatially explicit and presented in a 0.9 x 0.9 km raster, with varying levels of uncertainty depending on the region. The data primarily originates from scientific publications on soil and peatland research, as well from other ‘external’ sources such as national agencies and online repositories. We prioritized datasets that: 1. directly identified peatlands and clearly distinguished them from other land cover types (e.g., non-peatland wetlands), 2. had a large to mid spatial scale (1:25,000 to 1:250,000), and 3. provided comprehensive coverage of peatlands in the landscape unit. The majority of the original publications consulted provide detailed information on the methods used and the uncertainties involved. All integrated data in this assessment adhere to the definitions outlined in the original studies.
