The present note provides information on recent developments related to how environmental
law has contributed to efforts to achieve sustainable development in Africa, taking into account recent
developments, including the outcome of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development
(Rio+20), held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012, and other related processes. The note makes
general recommendations on strategic areas that can enhance the use of environmental law in its
contribution to the wider efforts of improving environmental governance in the region.
