Honourable President, Honourable Ministers Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the people and government of the Republic of Kenya for hosting the first special session, convened at the United Nations Environment Programme's headquarters in Nairobi to mark its fiftieth anniversary. The UN Environment Programme's 50th anniversary comes at a crucial time. It comes as the globe battles the worldwide epidemic of COVID-19 while also striving to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, including the environmental dimension of the SDG. This is compounded by the fact that the globe is in a constant state of crisis, with environmental issues becoming increasingly complicated, endangering all life on our one and only planet. In view of these rising concerns, notably environmental, it is appropriate to reflect on our collective responsibilities, UNEP's role, and the considerable progress it has made at a time when it is marking a half-millennium since its establishment.en_US
