In order to address the issue of mercury in Suriname in both the short, medium and long term, Suriname needs to gain an understanding of the mercury waste streams. A better understanding of the mercury waste streams can lead to an informed decision as to whether or not to sign and ratify the Minamata Convention. The “Mercury Storage and Disposal Project” aims to collect accurate data on the sources and quantities of mercury waste as well as on the amounts of mercury released to the environment.
