The Regional Seas Programme was launched in 1974 in the wake of the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden. Today, 35 years after its launch, the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans1 are one of the most comprehensive global initiatives for the protection of marine and coastal environments, covering 18 regions of the world‟s oceans, through the participation of more than 143 countries.
