This Information Note aims to improve understanding of the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment and why it matters. Further, the note traces the origins of this right, describes its key elements and highlights the expected benefits of its
recognition by the General Assembly. Importantly, the note outlines the roles of different stakeholders in advancing realization of the right. Doing so is imperative to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development because environmental degradation threatens the ability of countries to achieve sustainable and people-centered development.
