dc.description | TierraMar launched SeaNet Indonesia as a sustainable initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods in East Indonesia. This case study showcases one of the focus areas of the project, ghost gear recovery in local fishing communities in Merauke. SeaNet implemented the first fishing net recycling programme in Indonesia. The project utilized a community cooperative model that collected 18 tonnes of abandoned fishing nets over 18 months and sold them to be recycled into carpet tiles. This initiative has had a positive impact on both the fishing community and the environment in the region, strengthening sustainability and livelihoods. The ‘Combatting Ghost Gear in the East Asian Seas’ case study series is developed by the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA) with the aim to share and replicate good practices to prevent, retrieve, manage and recycle end-of-life fishing gear in the region. Case studies are part of the COBSEA ghost gear toolbox. | en_US |
