This report highlights the environmentally sound management of plastic waste by integrating the concept of waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, recycle) and UNEP’s policy on environmentally sound management (ESM) (UNEP, 2002). The report presents the findings on the sources of plastic leakage to the environment to identify the regions to focalise the global effort to fight against the plastic pollution. It also presents different municipal solid waste (MSW) management strategies utilised globally, plastic waste management strategies and technologies, economic value of plastic waste, as well as a systematic evaluation mechanism to select appropriate technologies to manage plastic waste in an environmentally sound manner.en_US
