The main objective of the EIA: 155ue5, Trends and Practice document is to enhance the capacity of countries, particularly developing countries and countries in transition to market economies, to devise suitable country specific environmental impact assessment (EIA) guidelines and to address emerging issues facing the use of EIA to achieve sustainable development. The EIA: issues, Trends and Practice document is intended to enhance coherence in the adoption of [IA practices, based on a review and comparative analysis of existing [IA practices. It identifies the underlying principles and the significant common features in the practice of EIA. Based on this comparative analy5is, the document derives a set of key references for EIA practices and addresses emerging issues. Specifically the document will assist EIA practitioners to review, or develop, EIA guidelines appropriate to the specific needs, development priorities and socio-economic and cultural background of countries.
