The Compendium of Environmental Law of African Countries is prepared by the Environmental 'Law and Institutions Programme Activity Centre (ELIJPAC) under the auspices of the UNEP/UNDP Joint Project on Environ-mental Law and Institutions in Africa which is funded by the Dutch Government. The objective of the Joint Project is to mobilize the expertise and guidance of six different agencies in working with selected African countries towards the enhancement of their legal and institutional capabilities in the field of environmental law. The agencies involved in this exercise are UNEP, UNDP, FAO, The World Bank, and the IUCN, all of which constitute the Project's Steering Committee. The World Health Organization(WFiO) which originally participated as an observer, has since with-drawn from the status due to exigencies of their situation.
