This directory is intended to serve as a source of information for planning and co-ordination of marine scientific investigations in Africa, whether bilateral or in the framework of programmes sponsored by international organizations. Among those programmes already concerned with such activities in African coastal waters are the UNEP sponsored Action Plans for the protection and development of the marine environment and coastal areas resources in the Mediterranean, the West and Central African Region, the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and the East African Region. Furthermore, a UNDP/UNESCO/ECP project on development of manpower in marine science and technology in Africa is due to start in 1993, and envisages the creation of graduate studies in oceanographic disciplines in universities in East and West Africa.
