Description
En mayo de 1984, el Programa de l~s Naclones Unldas para el Media Ambiente (PNUMA) [United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)] aprob6 el Plan Global de Acci6n para Ia Conservaci6n, Manejo y Utilizaci6n de Mamfferos Marinos (PAMM). Uno de los primeros proyectos de campo patroclnados por el PNUMA, en colaboracl6n con Ia Unl6n lnternacional para Ia Conservaci6n de Ia Naturaleza y los Recursos Naturales (UICN) (International Union tor the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)], dentro de dicho Plan Global de Acci6n, se inici6 en 1985 con el objetivo de estudlar Ia biologla y el estado actual de Ia marsopa esplnosa. Phocoena spinipinnis, en aguas costeras de Peru (Gaskin et ru .. 1987; Read et al., 1988). Sin embargo, Ia informaci6n obtenida desde los inlcios del proyecto demostr6 que Ia explotacl6n (intencional e incidentaQ de cetaceos pequefios en aguas peruanas era de una magnltud mayor que Ia sospechada y que, ademas, no se limltaba a una sola especle. Por consiguiente, se consider6 conveniente ampliar el marco del proyecto original para incluir otras especies de cetaceos.
