In adopting the 17 Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, world leaders outlined bold and transformative steps urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path for the people, planet and prosperity. The SDGs provide a renewed commitment to sustainable development and identified necessary measures to address in an integrated manner key economic, environmental and social challenges. At the first Inter-Ministerial Conference on Health and Environment in Africa, governments adopted the Libreville Declaration that was specifically designed to recognize the linkages between health and environment with a view to achieve sustainable development, to promote an integrated approach to policy-making and to undertake specific actions required to leverage the necessary changes in institutional arrangements and investment frameworks for mitigating environmental threats to human health. This recognition was re-affirmed at the second inter-ministerial conference through the adoption of the Luanda Commitment on the implementation of the Libreville Declaration.
