The UNEP Adaptation Gap Report 2024 highlights the urgent need to scale up climate adaptation efforts. Despite rising international public finance, from $22 billion in 2021 to $28 billion in 2022, the annual adaptation finance gap remains staggering, estimated at $187–359 billion. Over 170 countries have national adaptation policies, but implementation lags, particularly in fragile states. The report calls for ambitious climate finance commitments at COP 29, stronger adaptation components in updated NDCs, and innovative financial instruments to unlock funding. Effective adaptation requires improved capacity-building, technology transfer, and a shift from short-term projects to strategic, transformational planning. Equity must guide financing models, ensuring responsibility aligns with capability. Without urgent action, vulnerable nations will continue to bear the brunt of escalating climate impacts. This report underscores the critical need for global cooperation to meet the Global Goal on Adaptation and build resilience worldwide.
