Mercury (Hg) is a toxic substance and a global pollutant that poses adverse effects to human health and environment, especially affecting vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women. Mercury can travel long distances through the atmosphere, persist in environment for extended periods, and accumulate in living organisms throughout food chain ecosystem. Therefore, Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health and Department of Pollution Control, Ministry of Environment have initiated a project to minimize the use of dental amalgam and enhance Thailand's capacity for environmentally management under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. These efforts are part of the Global Environment Facility funded project “Accelerate implementation of dental amalgam provisions and strengthen country capacities in the environmental sound management of associated wastes under the Minamata Convention” which is implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme and executed by the World Health Organization with targeted technical assistance from the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership. The project aims to develop dental restorative guidelines of alternative materials and reduce the use of dental amalgam. It also aims to develop measurable, equitable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly models for managing mercury and hazardous mercury waste from dental procedures.en_US
