This book looks at the role the law plays and could potentially play in preserving and protecting our natural environment. It brings together in a single volume, six important essays on legal approaches to environmental sustainability. The book is written mainly for the Sri Lankan judiciary and seeks to engage judges in a conversation about current environmental challenges and the most effective methods of legal protection. Judges have a unique role in today’s society. As custodians of the rule of law and interpreters of the constitution, legislation and public policy, judges are well placed to make an important contribution to the replenishment and protection of the natural environment. While this book is aimed mainly at judges, it is likely to be of interest to legal educators, students, policy makers, lawyers and environmentalists.
