This technical guide provides background information and data on sources and amounts of produced used lead batteries, an overview of available standards, technical specification and guidelines on the storage and treatment of batteries and accumulators as well as information on associated environmental and health aspects. It also describes the collection, transport and storage, treatment and recovery of used lead batteries, as well as their transboundary movement. Finally it explains potential sources of environmental contamination, and discusses economic aspects of environmentally sound management of used lead batteries.
