Methanol is a colourless, polar, volatile, flammable liquid with a mild alcoholic odour when pure. It decomposes on heating producing carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. Methanol reacts violently with oxidizing materials such as perchlorates, chromium trioxide, bromine, sodium hypochiorite, chlorine and hydrogen peroxide resulting in fire and explosive mixtures.
