The overall objectives of the Long-term Programme of Pollution Monitoring and Research in the Mediterranean Sea (MED POL Phase II), which constitutes the environmental assessment component of the Mediterranean Action Plan, adopted by the governments of the region in 975, include the assessment, on a continuing basis, of the state of pollution of the Mediterranean Sea, the identification of the sources, pathways and effects of pollutants entering into it, and the establishment of temporal trends in pollution levels.
