The 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20 Conference) provides the pan-European region with the opportunity to assess its progress towards sustainable development and plan for the actions needed in order to place this part of the world more firmly on a sustainable development path. While many countries in this region are taking action towards environmental,
social and economic sustainability, these efforts are not yet sufficient to significantly accelerate the pace towards a development model with a strong sustainability dimension. Therefore, this report aims to present the challenges linked to sustainable development in the pan-European region and to make concrete policy proposals for managing the green transition to ensure the greatest benefit for the people of the region.
Consideration for the human dimension is at the core of the development paradigm advocated in the report. Such an integrated approach has been made possible due to the wide range of expertise and experience of United Nations entities active in the region. It is also a demonstration of the United Nations commitment to work with countries on policies and strategies to advance green economies and sustainable development in Europe and Central Asia.
