The proper collection, treatment, and disposal of wastewater is essential to protecting human health as well as to protect the natural environment. The Caribbean Sea Ecosystem Assessment (CARSEA) , 2007, also found that sewage was one of the main factors that had caused approximately 80 percent (80%) of living coral in the Caribbean to be lost in the previous twenty years. High rates of pollution
also negatively affect the fishing industry and the tourism sectors; both vital to the region’s economy. The GEF CReW Project aimed to address the three significant challenges to wastewater management: inadequate policy and legal frameworks, insufficient financing and the low priority placed on waste water treatment.
