La Iniciativa Latinoamericana y Caribeña para el Desarrollo Sostenible – ILAC, fue propuesta en el Foro de Ministros de Medio Ambiente de América Latina y Caribe, durante la Conferencia Mundial sobre Desarrollo Sostenible realizada en Johannesburgo, en Sudáfrica, en el 2002, y fue incorporada en el plan de acción de dicha Conferencia. Se trata de una serie de directrices en el formato de metas y acciones en áreas prioritarias para la gestión ambiental y el desarrollo sostenible. La ILAC trata de contemplar las singularidades de la región, considerando las responsabilidades comunes y las diferencias entre los países.
