Seamounts are mostly located on mid-oceanic rifts or intra-plate hot spots. There ~1000 large seamounts in South West Indian Ocean, of which half are listed within EEZs. Because of their volcanic origin, seamounts contain mineral resources. Their extraction cost remains prohibitive to be profitable (but the situation could change in the coming decades).en_US
